Maria Bernathova, MD

I started my training in radiology back in 1996. I was particularly interested in diagnosing breast diseases and hence, very soon I decided to specialize in this area of radiology.

I was later able to deepen my knowledge at the University Hospital of Innsbruck, where I worked as a consultant radiologist in mammography from 2004 onwards. My area of responsibility included extensive clinical routine and training of radiology residents.

As medicine and computer science go hand in hand nowadays, I decided to take a part-time correspondence course in medical informatics and completed it with a master’s degree.

In the course of my career I also wanted to gain experience as a businesswoman. Gibraltar offered itself up for this, where in addition to my regular job as a Radiologist Consultant, I also co-founded a private multidisciplinary clinic.

2008 in Gibraltar, I initiated one of my most important career milestones: The Breast Cancer Screening Programme. Since 2011, I have been employed at The General Hospital of Vienna, (The AKH) exclusively as a Consultant Breast Radiologist.

The breast is especially important to every woman; and this very part of the body is most commonly affected by cancer. Breast disease, particularly breast cancer, affects not only the health and life of the patient, but also her femininity and self-esteem. Hence, I always put great emphasis on a sensitive and empathetic approach in the assistance and treatment of my patients.

As an internationally experienced and specialized expert in breast health, I know that an extremely fast and accurate diagnosis is of utmost importance! To ensure this, specialization in breast diagnostics is just as important as cutting-edge knowledge.

Whenever necessary, I work with a selected multidisciplinary team of experts in order to ensure the best possible and safest treatment at each stage of care.

Every woman is different!
Therefore, I adapt the care concept (personalized medicine) to the individual needs and necessities of of every single woman. This comprises the prevention/diagnosis, treatment/care and follow-up – as well as an understandable explanation of the findings for each patient.

I want to give my patients certainty: The certainty that they are receiving the best possible diagnosis, treatment and care and that they feel comfortable as my patients: be sure – be safe!
